What Warts Are And When To Seek Treatment
Warts can be painful and uncomfortable, but they tend to be harmless. Warts are the result of viral infections that enter the skin through cuts or abrasions. If they are not treated, they can grow to a significant size or spread out into groups of clusters. While warts may not be a reason to go to the emergency room, this doesn’t mean that people should just live with them. Some warts that develop may become very painful or even unsightly in appearance. If you have noticed a growth that is suspicious or bothering you, contact our team at the Dynamic Foot and Ankle Center for an examination appointment!
Warts
Warts are non-cancerous growths that may present on the heel, sole, or ball of your foot. They may begin as small bumps that are mistaken as a corn or callous. If you are bothered by warts that have grown on your foot or nearby area, we recommend getting treatment before they turn more painful or accumulate in number. There are two kinds of warts, mosaic and solitary. Mosaic warts may develop initially as a cluster of small warts. Solitary warts are singular warts that may grow and add overtime if left untreated. You may contract the virus that causes warts through breaks in the skin or cuts, and coming into contact with contaminated surfaces. When the virus enters the body, it can cause an infection and then warts. This virus thrives in moist and warm spaces, which is why infected areas commonly include gyms, locker rooms, public showers, and pool decks.
If you have noticeable symptoms of warts that start as small spots and develop into a roughly raised bump, we suggest getting treatment before it worsens. Some of our patients have reported feeling tenderness or pain when walking or standing for many hours at a time. Warts may develop small black dots in the very center, as these are dried clots in the blood vessels connected to the wart. After an examination, we may suggest at-home care and in-office treatments. Using over-the-counter creams, patches, and freezing medication can prove helpful. Our treatments for warts in-clinic may entail cryotherapy, laser therapy, electrocautery, salicylic acid, and more. Depending on the severity, more than one session may be needed to eliminate the wart or warts completely.
